an unexpected surprise
Here’s a quick story that happened over the weekend which demonstrates the universe’s ability to deliver abundance in unexpected forms -
On Saturday I was taking my kids shopping for new winter coats. In the car on the way there, Nick announced, “I want to get a ventriloquist dummy today.”
This statement immediately went in one of my ears and out the other. After all, we were looking for coats. Ventriloquist dummies were not on my ‘must get’ list, and besides, where on earth would you go to get one?
When we got to the coat store, we discovered that it was no longer in existence. However there was an antiques market which I told the kids we could walk through.
Nick found a man who worked there and asked, “Do you have any ventriloquist dummies?”
There were about 75 booths, but the man was able to recall one that had a dummy and led Nick to it. It was quite beat up and missing a shoe, but the price was an affordable $18, so Nick said he would take it.
While he was waiting in line to pay, I noticed the woman standing in line behind him trying to get my attention. When I looked at her, she mouthed the words, “Do you have ANY IDEA how much that is worth?”
I shrugged, thinking, “About $18, no?”
She slowly mouthed, “SE..VEN… HUN…DRED…DOL…LARS.”
After Nick had paid for his purchase I approached her and asked how she would know the value of this odd item. She gave me her business card and said, “My husband and I have been antiques appraisers for 35 years.” They invited Nick to bring the puppet to their next public appraisal event so they could give him a thorough appraisal and some history of his “Charlie McCarthy”.
Nick, whose goal in life is to make as much money as possible while doing as little work as possible declared Saturday the best day of his life so far.
